2010-2013 Apple Mac Pro Tower - Model 5,1

Configure Your 2010-2013 Apple Mac Pro Tower - Model 5,1

  • Processors

The Mac Pro can be configured with single or dual 64-bit Intel Xeon 'Westmere' 6-core processors. It supports Hyper-Threading which allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core -- so Mac OS recognizes up to 24 total cores on this model, 12 real and 12 virtual. It also supports "Turbo Boost" which automatically boosts the processor speed based on workload - so if an application is only using 1 of the 12 cores it will automatically increase the speed of the cores in use and turn off the unused cores.

    Single Processor

    Dual Processor

    Memory

When configured with dual processors, the Mac Pro supports up to 128GB of DDR3 1333MHz ECC memory in eight slots. When configured with a single processor, the Mac Pro supports up to 64GB of DDR3 1333MHz ECC memory in four slots. All memory sets are new.

PCIe SSD / Flash Storage (Boot Drive)

Apple produced the Mac Pro with a SATA II (3GB/s) onboard drive bay controller. New SSDs are SATA III (6GB/s). Installing your SSD on the PCI-Express (PCIe) controller instead of the SATA II controller will allow the SSD to perform at full speed; achieving up to double the speed.

SATA II SSD's (Drive Bay) offer a max transfer rate of ~275Mbps.
SATA III SSD's (PCIe) offer a max transfer rate of ~550Mbps.

The new 'cylinder' Mac Pros use flash storage drives which perform at ~1350Mbps. We are able to install the 'cylinder' flash storage drives in the tower Mac Pro.

Since these drives will be installed on a PCI-Express slot, the drive bays will be free. Thus, allowing the SSD/flash boot drive plus 4 hard drives.

PCIe SSD / Flash Storage (Secondary)

If you would like to completely eliminate hard drives from your Mac Pro to only go with SSD's, you can select a second PCIe SSD. The second SSD can hold the files you are currently editing or your sessions/samples if you are in audio production.

In addition to the two PCIe SSD's, you can have four more SSDs or hard drives in the below hard drive bays.

    Hard Drive / SSD - Bay 1

Your Mac Pro includes four drive bays, allowing you to configure it with up to four hard drives or solid-state drives, in any combination. Configure each drive bay separately. All hard drives and solid-state drives are new.

Hard drives perform at ~150Mb/s. Solid-State drives on the drive bay perform at ~275Mb/s. Selecting your boot drive as a solid-state drive instead of a hard drive will generate faster boot time, import/open/saving of large files, and application start-up.

    Hard Drive / SSD - Bay 2

Configure the second drive bay with an additional hard drive or solid-state drive.

    Hard Drive / SSD - Bay 3

Configure the third drive bay with an additional hard drive or solid-state drive.

    Hard Drive / SSD - Bay 4

Configure the fourth drive bay with an additional hard drive or solid-state drive.

    Graphics

Configure your Mac Pro with a graphics card. The Mac Pro tower is limited to one graphics card due to power supply restrictions.
